Moving on, we reached the beautiful city of Sebeș, where you can find one of the most important Evangelical churches in Transylvania. Again, this church is a masterpiece dating back from the XIIth century, showing the medieval transformations and combinations of Roman and Gothic styles. You can basically learn everything you need to know about these architectural styles just by studying its details and its sculptures. Just look at it carefully and you will find it to be really amazing. It is a well-preserved monument with a beautiful yard and you can find it really easy as it is situated right in the centre of the city.
Our last stop of the Medieval Architecture trip was Alba-Iulia. Here we spent a few hours visiting the Catholic Cathedral, which is the biggest and most detailed of them all and from the second you enter it, it literally takes your breath away. But, funny story, make sure you reach it in time, because we visited it very close to its closing hours and the cleaning ladies were not very happy about seeing us and kept telling us to get out.. But more important than that, you have to know that the Alba Carolina citadel has a lot to offer and we suggest you take at least an afternoon to visit it and walk around its beautiful streets.
Now we have a few trip tips for you *yay*:
- At every corner you find really interesting statues which are really fun to take selfies with!
- There are some amazing restaurants and coffeeshops inside the citadel where you can take a relaxing break..
- You really have to rent some bikes and ride along with your friends around the citadel walls! It’s easy to rent, really cheap and lots of fun guaranteed!
So, if you are an Architecture enthusiast or just eager to learn more about Transylvania’s history, this trip and this route is perfect for you. It’s close whether you are from around Cluj-Napoca, Alba-Iulia, Sibiu, or even Brașov or Deva. The route we took was: Cluj-Napoca – Teiuș – Cricău – Sebeș – Alba-Iulia – and back to Cluj-Napoca. It only takes a day to take this trip.
We hoped you enjoyed our post as we try with every travel story to promote Romania’s wonders, because it’s easy, fun and cheap to be a tourist in your own country. You just have to really want to enjoy life and not just dream about it.
