Insulation Obsession A couple of weeks ago, we participated in a photography workshop coordinated by Laurian Ghinitoiu ( a Romanian architecture photographer, based in Berlin ), which took place during the Architecture Days 2016. We must say, that was a hell of an experience. We learned more about architecture photography from Laurian during those 4 days, than every website, book, tutorial or magazine can ever teach you. It was worth every penny. Moving on, the main task of the workshop was photo-documenting the main areas in Cluj-Napoca, outside the city centre. We had to photo-document Mănăștur, one of those neighbourhoods full with collective housing mainly from the communist era, but also with contemporary buildings with very questionable quality. Moreover, we had to find something specific, some local details, something to express the great Mănăștur feeling. And this is how we found out that the people living in those communist blocks started painting them in different shades, in their favourite colors as a result of conducting thermal insulation procedures because of the poor conditions in which those blocks have been built many years ago. It may not be the perfect specific detail of Mănăștur, but it sure was fascinating for us, and who knows, it may grow into something bigger 🙂
